Letter to West Horsley Residents from West Horsley Place

Very disappointing news from West Horsley Place, as some residents around Cranmore Lane in West Horsley received the below letter. We believe the answer is not to sell off even small parcels of woodland for development in the Horsleys, which is currently already seeing the addition of hundreds of new housing developments and loosing it’s wild spaces at a rapid rate.

As a listed building, we understand the need and costs involved with it’s upkeep. However at the same time, the West Horsley Place Trust’s own vision is to form a place of conservation and preservation of their estate’s natural landscape. There are many other ways of raising that sort of funding and we would welcome some conversation or comment with the community. What have they looked into for fundraising? Have they explored other avenues? How they have come to this conclusion?

The community, who has engaged and supported the estate through it’s various stages, some with close ties to the house from it’s previous owner, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, will be highly disappointed with this news along with the wider community and those who will be effected by the planning and development that will surely follow this land sale.

-West Horsley Place’s PUBLISHED sustainability goals-

This feels like a very back door approach to what will effect the villages in the long term. How many other land plots on the estate are they looking to sell for development? That section of woodland has already experienced the unsettling of nature, balance and fauna in the surrounding area with developments. Deer and other woodland animals live in this decreasing space, and by unsettling them and further pushing their territory out upon the A246 main road. As many of us witnessed during the build of Meadow View and the surrounding developments, the sight of deer running along the road or leaping across as they have been disturbed from their woodland by Cranmore Lane.

We will be meeting to address this letter and ultimately it’s planning application, once we have set a date - we will add this to the calendar and newsletter for all who wish to attend.

The HCPS quarterly walks

Walks and Hiking

The Society provides conducted Saturday morning walks in each quarter. They are usually between 4 and 5 miles in length, starting and finishing at a local hostelry. It is a time to have a little exercise and enjoy the views, local flora and fauna. They are advertised with a detailed description in the previous issue of the 'Around and About Horsley' Magazine and our diary. The Winter one is often a bit shorter and of one stage, starting and finishing at a pub of course! Please check the Events Calendar for the next available walk.

We are fortunate to have a group of leaders that know our countryside well. There will an explanation of the terrain and it is a good opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones. Do come and join us!

For more trails and walks to try out yourself, you can see the Surrey Hills Walks guide and our Diamond Jubilee Trail here. See our previous Quarterly Walks blogs here and we look forward to welcoming you on our next walk.
